I was amused that spells in this wizard world are catchphrases and lyrics, things and memes that gain power by sticking in people's heads and culture, instead of Latin-ish mishmash. I'd be happier with less of her, but you read the book that exists, not necessarily the one you want. one paperback copy of CARRY ON - one Rainbow Rowell tote bag. Agatha is kind of useless, but in a way she has to be since she's the person who should be in these books at least a little bit who doesn't want to be involved in someone else's huge, dangerous destiny. The Rainbow Rowell Collection includes: - one exclusive collectors edition of ELEANOR &. I like most of the characters, and the Simon and Baz relationship mostly worked for me. Also, since the narrative is basically the last book of such a series you feel like you read the other ones already, so Simon can briefly talk about something that happened in, say, year four and you feel like you read and know it already so he doesn't have to explain all about it and go off the current plot for a while. Carry On isn't quite fanfiction with the serial numbers filed off since the characters don't correspond to the original precisely, but it's good to know the original roles and world this series is riffing off of and commenting on. It turns out that you don't have to read Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl to get this book, but you do need to have read the Harry Potter series, since of all the Chosen One narratives that inspired this book, Potter is the biggest one. It's already a multi-listen book for me, and I'll probably even get a physical copy of the book, which is something I do so rarely these days.Music: "I Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode The old power families with long lines of. I'll leave by saying that this book, while extremely fulfilling in and of itself, also left me wanting more and more and more of this world. Major Conflict and Resolution Simon Snow is the prophesized Chosen One who is destined to save the World of Mages. I don't think it's necessary, but it will probably increase your appreciation of this story. I would suggest reading Fangirl first, if you haven't, before Carry On. I found myself laughing out loud (or wanting to) at his internal observations many times, which can be difficult to bear when you're listening on the bus at 4am. And can I just say how much I love Baz? I remember Cath in Fangirl calling him an "unreliable narrator" in her version of the Simon Snow universe, but in Carry On, he's the absolute best, and his POV chapters ended up being my favorites in the book. The characters are constantly defying tropes without ever feeling like they're doing it specifically to thumb their noses at the genre, because they feel real as they are. Carry On was so much fun, with magic and prophecies and a Chosen One and a nemesis and romance without being what you expect when you read about a book having those things. I thought about it for a bit, forgot for a couple days, then went back after it'd been released and downloaded it. As I always do when I think I might enjoy an author's other books, I checked out what else she had out once I was done with Fangirl, and saw Carry On was about to come out. Rainbow Rowell's writing is really easy to get into, and her humor is the winner for me. I liked it! It was cute, and enjoyable, even if I might not listen to it again very soon. I don't normally go for /regular/ fiction, but I'd read a good, convincing review from a trusted source, and thought, hey, nothing wrong with a break from my usual epic fantasy stories for a light romance read, and the fandom slant was new. I discovered and read (listened to) Fangirl quite by accident, just about 5 days before Carry On was released.
